Getting to Pavones

The best way to get to Pavones from San José, Costa Rica (SJO) is to take a flight (45min) to the town of Golfito where you can rent a car and drive 1 hr 15 min to Pavones.

About Climate

Our raining season is between late September through late November, December is the beginning of our summer where you can expect sunny skies through April. We begin to get light showers in the late afternoons and evenings and progressively more rain into the months of August and September as we move into the heaviest part of the rainy season. The climate is to say the least TROPICAL.

Our Beaches

Pavones is primarily a surfing destination although we also have a few beaches that are great for swimming with kids, as well as a few low tide pools that are great for relaxing and cooling off from the hot sun. Punta Banco beach is about a 10 min drive from the house which is a long sandy palm tree lined beach great for hanging out and exploring the surroundings where a few waterfalls can be found.

Waterfalls

There are a few waterfalls worth exploring in Pavones, we can set you up with a local guide to show you around or you can also explore on your own. We’ll pack you a to-go bag with local snacks and water to enjoy along the way.

THE SURF

Pavones is home to the second longest left point break in the world and is located in the southern pacific coast of Costa Rica on the edge of a large bay called El Golfo Dulce. Creating long endless perfect left point rides that break for over 1km. There are several other perfect left point breaks scattered through the Pavones coastline and on the other side of the large bay you will find Cabo Matapalo, where there are three world class right point breaks, you can take a quick boat  (panga style) across in 40minutes. Matapalo is a national park , truly abundant in wildwife and dense tropical rainforest. We encourage guests to get off the boat and explore on land , it is beautiful and there is also a couple places to get a nice meal and drinks or cold beer.

The Farm

Part of our mission at Pura Vista is to make our land as productive as possible for the long term by employing the principles of permaculture design. Over the last two years we've worked with Porvenir Design to create a landscape intentionally designed to create wildlife habitat, produce food, restore soils, and generally support as much life as possible. With a focus on guest experience and food production, we have planted a mix of fruit trees and long term over story species that over time will provide fresh, nutrient dense foods right on site--a truly local production plan. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of the Pura Vista trail systems to explore the property, harvest fruits that are in season, and engage with the local landscape.

Exotic tropical fruits like jackfruit, miracle fruit, biriba and starfruit are steps away from the accommodation, accompanied by more classic tropical crops such as cacao, avocado, and citrus. Beyond the tree crops, we are working to include tropical greens, herbs, and spices into our on site food offerings, giving guests a real look into what the Pavones area can produce. As our young orchards come into maturity, Pura Vista will be able to offer workshops on fruit harvesting and processing, cooking classes, chocolate making, and more. Stay tuned for educational experiences in the future! One of our primary goals is to feature seasonal, locally produced foods to our guests that keep them fueled and healthy during their time in Pavones.
